Welcome to Dunn To A Turn

The two basic approaches to turning wood on a lathe are faceplate turning and spindle turning. I am inclined towards faceplate turning because of its challenges and rewards. The wood I use is native to Atlantic Canada. Typically, I use yellow birch, hornbeam, elm, ash, oak, cherry, and maple. Unique characteristics such as spalt, burl, birdseye and curl are highlighted.

Normally the wood turnings will be offered individually. On occasion, I intend to offer private gallery sets when wood of extraordinary visual presence or rarity becomes available.

The majority of the turned pieces will be end turnings. To create an end turning, a vertical section is removed from the trunk of the tree and hollowed out. Usually, most or all of the bark is removed. Side turnings will also be offered when appearance will profit from this approach.

A variety of opinion exists on the subject of art vs craft. The woodturnings I produce are often described as art. I can only safely claim they are unique, hand crafted items. Depending on your geographical location vis a vis mine, they can be further described as exotic. By nature, default and intention, each is one of a kind.
